Placement Specialist - New York, NY

Upwardly Global is an award-winning nonprofit forging a new frontier in social entrepreneurship. Working in partnership with top-tier corporations such as JPMorgan Chase and Pepsi Bottling Group, we work to create professional opportunity and success for highly-educated and experienced immigrant professionals in the United States . Ranks of legal, foreign-born professionals formerly forced to work as cab drivers, nannies, and security guards in the United States have been able to move from the margins of the working poor and return to their careers with the help of Upwardly Global. In our second year in New York City , we are building the infrastructure to scale our operations from serving 200 jobseekers annually to serving 750 annually over the next three years, expanding our corporate partnerships, volunteer base, and outreach.

Position Description:

The Placement Specialist will report to the Manager of Employer Partnerships and will have the primary responsibility for creating interview opportunities at companies and organizations in a range of industries for Upwardly Global’s jobseekers. He/she will be expected develop contacts across industries through cold calling, attending conferences and professional networking events to generate leads, and cultivating Upwardly Global’s existing volunteer base for support in placement efforts. This person will also work directly with Upwardly Global jobseekers to understanding their skills sets and professional backgrounds in order to generate the most appropriate opportunities for them.

Required Qualifications

The Placement Specialist should have a strong track record of success in outplacement, job development, or other applicable background. Able to understand our jobseekers’ past professional experiences and transferable skills, this individual should be both resourceful and creative in finding “yes” opportunities for the jobseeker and expanding our base of Upwardly Global champions across industries in the New York City community of professionals. Demonstrated perseverance and optimism in achieving challenging goals is a must.

The successful candidate for this position will be a results-oriented professional who loves to help the underdog win. The ideal candidate will be a self-directed, optimistic, high energy professional who is flexible and comfortable operating in a start-up environment. In addition, this person will possess the following qualifications:

Job Search Advisor - New York, NY

The Job Search Advisor will report to the Managing Director and is the main relationship manager, coach, and advisor for Upwardly Global job seekers. He/She has the primary responsibility for establishing trust and rapport with the job seeker, understanding the jobseekers’ backgrounds and skills sets, starting them on the path to better marketing themselves through their resumes and cover letters, and managing their learning, development, and job search progress.

Responsibilities include:

  • Resume development and revision
  • Job research and fit assessment
  • Cover letter preparation
  • Coaching jobseekers in interview skills and marketing themselves
  • Monitoring and managing mentor relationships with jobseeker for maximum impact
  • Assessing overall applicant readiness to be introduced to employer partners at various milestones during the program
  • Managing exposure to Upwardly Global’s alumni, volunteers, and corporate partners to achieve placement
  • On-going relationship management with jobseekers
  • Sharing participant progress with fellow Advisors to maximize collective learning
  • Tracking and reporting on metrics and outcomes to Managing Director

This is a great position for anyone with a background in teaching, human resources management, corporate training, outplacement services, or workforce development.

Manager of Employer Partnerships - San Francisco, CA

Position Responsibilities:

The Manager of Employer Partnerships will report to the Managing Director and will have primary responsibility for:

  • Identifying, cultivating and managing new employer partnerships with Fortune 1000 corporations
  • Developing and managing Upwardly Global's relationships with small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) and local non-profits to drive jobseeker placements.
  • Working closely with Upwardly Global's jobseeker services team to establish a candidate pool and drive towards placement goals
  • Collaborating with the Senior Associate, Volunteer Programs to leverage existing corporate volunteer network for business development efforts
  • Supervising two employer network staff
  • Marketing and delivering diversity trainings and other value-added services to employers including bi-monthly training calls
  • Working with Managing Director to effectively communicate Upwardly Global's vision and value to the local business marketplace

Desired Qualifications

  • Self-starter with minimum 5 years of sales/HR professional work experience, and a proven track record of new business development.
  • Recruiting/staffing sales or experience selling into HR highly preferred
  • Bachelors degree required; Master's degree in business or other related field preferred
  • Experience in sales and business development, marketing, outreach and event design and implementation

Program Manager, Upwardly Global Chicago, IL

In our first year in Chicago, this talented individual will have the responsibility for executing four high impact Career Summits for Immigrant Professionals and for growing Upwardly Global's network of employer partners, jobseekers, volunteers and supporters. The Chicago Program Manager will possess proven management experience, creative problem-solving skills and show resourcefulness in the service of social change. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Program Development and Management - The Program Manager serves as a project manager for the delivery of 4 well-run, organized and impactful Career Summits, including 4 Employer Breakfasts. The Program Manager oversees and conducts marketing through community partners, direct marketing and information sessions to sign up qualified jobseekers for the Summits. The Program Manager oversees the work of the Job Search Advisor to ensure that post-Summit at least 25 jobseekers are placed into positions in their career fields.
  • Network Building - The Program Manager will work with the local team to recruit 150 volunteers, introduce local employers to Upwardly Global, forge referral partnerships with key community agencies and bring more than 150 immigrant jobseekers into Upwardly Global's network.
  • Team Management, Development and Coaching - The Program Manager will oversee the work of 2-3 program staff, with support from the Executive Director.
  • Fundraising - The Program Manager has a first year revenue generation goal of $150,000 from local foundation grants, individual donor gifts and corporate sponsorship of the Career Summits. The Program Manager will be coached by the Executive Director to reach this goal.

Desired Qualifications:

  • BA/BS or foreign degree equivalent required. Master's degree (or foreign-degree equivalent) in business, public policy or other related field from top tier university preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive program management and program service delivery experience required. At least three years of staff management experience required.
  • Industry experience and contacts in workforce development, human resources, corporate training, career counseling, staffing or placement preferred.
  • Established Chicago network is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce and motivate/manage others, including volunteers, toward measurable results.
  • Exceptional communicator, written and verbal.
  • Evidence of past success in a start-up environment is desired.
  • High level of integrity, professional pride, and maturity.

This important program role is the primary contact for Upwardly Global's jobseekers and experiences firsthand the rewards of helping new Americans to find their career opportunity in the US.

Program and Outreach Fellow, Upwardly Global Chicago, IL

This is an opportunity for an entrepreneurial recent college graduate who is interested in gaining hands-on social entrepreneurship experience and is passionate about helping immigrant communities in Chicago. The Program and Outreach Fellow will work closely with local Chicago teammates, volunteers, national team members to launch the Chicago program. In our first year in Chicago the Program and Outreach Fellow will work with more than 20 community agencies and will be a key contributor to the successful execution of four high impact Career Summits for more than 100 immigrant jobseekers from a diversity of professions and nationalities.

This is a full-time position that includes a monthly stipend and a bonus at successful completion of the Fellowship year. There is the potential for highly successful Fellows to continue on with Upwardly Global in a salaried staff position, with increased responsibility. Two of Upwardly Global's past Fellows are now salaried staff members.

The Fellow joins a national organization of committed, ambitious, creative, action-oriented and inspired professionals.   • Create and maintain outreach and referral channels with local resettlement, ESL, employment, educational, immigration and nonprofit agencies and ethnic media outlets.
  • Create outreach/referral channels with congregations and religious communities.
  • Conduct presentations at community events
  • Plan, market and host information sessions
  • Screen jobseeker applications and enroll jobseekers in Career Summit
  • Manage all logistics and event planning and for Career Summit, including space, catering, materials, and registration.
  • During the Summits, serve as the event coordinator, managing flow, assigning and briefing team members, providing customer service, resolving last-minute requests and other issues, to ensure an excellent experience for all participants.

Qualities and Skills desired of Fellow

  • BA or BS or equivalent foreign degree credential
  • 1-2 years of nonprofit experience, preferred
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Previous event planning experience is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Chicago communities is required.

Manager, Policy and Systemic Change Initiatives, Upwardly Global Chicago, IL

A new role, Manager, Policy and Systemic Change Initiatives is based at Upwardly Global Chicago and joins the Upwardly Global National team.

This is a unique opportunity for an entrepreneurial and results-oriented policy professional who enjoys analyzing systems, identifying barriers and proposing creative solutions. The Manager will work closely with the Executive Director, Managing Directors and other members of the National team to create greater efficiency, and transparency with regard to licensing requirements and other processes that stand between immigrants and economic integration. Based in Chicago, the Manager will work closely with partners, including the Office of New Americans, Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, community agencies and immigrant jobseekers to map the licensing process for up to 20 professions and identify and/or create new avenues for the licensure and employment of foreign educated professionals.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Research and Document Licensure Processes for Key Professions. Map licensing pathways and create an easily understood licensing wiki for use by immigrant jobseekers and those who provide services for them.
  • Identify Barriers to Immigrant Licensure, including:
    - Conduct market research with Upwardly Global jobseekers and service providers about ease of and barriers to licensure in key states (IL, NY/NJ and CA). This may include surveys, interviews, focus groups and attendance at Upwardly Global workshops for jobseekers.
    - Conduct market research with regulatory agencies and key employers to understand barriers.
  • Propose Solutions to Critical Barriers, including creating timeline for implementation, projected costs, and projected impact of removing barrier.

Desired Qualifications

  • At least 4 years of post-college public or nonprofit sector experience with a successful track record
  • BS/BA or foreign degree equivalent required (Please note: full work authorization required, no visa sponsorship.)
  • Master's degree from a leading program desired
  • Experience with legislative and regulatory processes at the State level, particularly with the State of IL.
  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations governing workforce and employment issues.
  • Exceptional and demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize information and research from a broad range of sources
  • Inquisitive, methodical, meticulous and highly organized.
